Line weights built into a template

I need to add different line weights and colors for the different families in a project template. LVLs with a thicker purple outline, I-Joists with a thin red outline, steel beams with a dashed black outline, etc... So far I have accomplished this by right clicking, and overriding the views per family instance in each project I've worked on. Is there a way to add these settings permanently in this template so when I place an LVL or a group of joists, they appear in the colors I need them to be?

I've tinkered with Manage -> Object Styles but I cannot figure out if this is where I need to do this or not.

Yes--Object Styles will globally control the line display for your categories.

-You should create View Templates for your Structural Views with these modified line overrides, then apply the View Templates to your struct. views in the .rte template file.

-Then when starting new projects from the template file, the views will be set up.

-For existing projects, use Transfer Project Standards, and select View Templates to override your project with the template file's view templates.

Okay, I did what you said and while it worked, it only sort of worked. ALL of my families are a single color (red - which should just be my joists). I think it is applying to the category instead of on a per family basis.  Is there a way to split it by family instead of category?

You can create subcategories in the families and assign them to different types of members them for different line weight/color/line pattern.
