Line Thickness

I've gone in vg, object styles, override graphics in view - I can't seem to be able to change to the lineweight for these architectural columns other than by overriding the linestyle. 

What's going on? Below is my view when coarse is on - it seems to change the lineweight. 

and here these lines are w medium detail. Why would this change the thickness of the line?

They look like Structural Columns.  In coarse, their line weight is governed by Stick Symbols subcategory under Structural Columns.

Some families could contain imbedded/nested Detail Components with specific display settings...ie:

1. In coarse Plan view the 2D Detail component is displayed  

2. In medium or Fine the 3D Element is displayed

In such case the weight of the nested component is under Detail Items and not Columns

Though I can't seem to add new line styles in the family...

You need to open the column family >>> select and edit the nested detail family and add the line style therein >>> then reload back to the column and subsequently to the project //// upload the column family I would gladly show you how...its a 30 sec thing

I'm in the family, where can I get access to the nested family? I can't access linestyles.

In the browser to the left under families... expand and select it.... Alternative is to hover over with the mouse and tab select the relevant element
