Line based family with detail line in foreground

Hi,

I am trying to create a line based generic model of a masonry support angle that will be modelled inside my external walls. So that when you view an elevation, you will not be able to see it.

I want then to nest a detail line based family in the masonry support angle family to show nothing more than a dashed line on my elevations indicating their extent within the walls.

I can only get the above to work if the generic model sticks out from the wall face. As soon as it is embedded, it disappears.

Can anyone help me out ? I have read some other posts, but cannot find an answer.

Thanks.

In the family, draw an invisible model line in the z direction long enough the cut the project view's cut plane, and the detail lines* in the family will be visible in the project even though the element is buried in or obscured by solid geometry.

*Detail Lines=Symbolic lines

...if you don't understand fully, you can post family and I'll do it for you.

FWIW: Symbolic Lines are view direction specific: they only show in views parallel to their creation view.  Sounds like you want to see them Elevation.  They would need to be drawn in the Front or Back view then.   Don't know if this applies in your case though. Just thought I'd mention it.

Thank you both for your help.

Between both your replies, I have succeeded. You prompted me to think a little differently and it works by:

  1. Generic line based model
  2. The ref plan view will be insertion plane on the wall
  3. The symbolic line will be on the ref plane
  4. The model will be below the ref plane (i.e. set into the wall)
  5. Model is controlled by "length", "width" and "setback" parameters

Happy days. Thanks! I have attached in case it helps anyone else.
