Line-based families inside groups drop to bottom level?

Hello,

this is an old bug, but it appears it is still happening in Revit 2023.

Line based families contained within groups at different levels will be "dropped" at level 01, although still inside the group.

This creates a number of problems, of course, beginning with multiple identical instances of the same elements overlapping.

There is a work around on Autodesk website, which suggests to remove the family, rename the group, add it back at in a group at level 01, then replace all other groups, or something olong these lines.

Is any new development on this bug? Any actual resolution?

We really like line-based families, but I cannot use them because they drop off groups.

Thank you

regards

Sadly linebase will not work if you have level, reference plane or floor as your host. Funny enough linebase will work with vertical surface or reference plane when you add them to the group. Depending how your linebase is setup, you can draw vertical reference plane where you want your linebase will be

Once you add those line, the group will function as normal.

But this means that the line based family will be placed vertically?

My families are built to be flat horizontal, not vertical.

This is clearly a bug, and we need it to be fixed.

the work-around for using the families in a horizontal-plane:

  • add a model-line to the group.
  • change the work-plane of the family-instance using the "pick a line" option, selecting the added model-line.LB_GenModel_03.png

The work-around isn't fool-proof, as you have to change the workplane for every (new) instance. Even [Create Similar]  will use the default placement, resulting in identical instances on the bottom-level.

I avoid using Line Based families when a group is needed.  They will not behave rationally. I have had to convert several of my families from Line Based to non hosted for this exact reason.
