Lighting Won't Place on Ceiling

I'm having trouble placing lighting fxtures on my ceiling.  Sometimes a warning comes up that "Can't place inserts outside of hosts.  These elements won't be copied".  I'm working in RCP and there is definitely a ceiling there, so why wouldn't the lighting place in a ceiling?  Sometimes it just disappears and other times it decides to place in the floor or something ridiculous and I can't select to move it to the ceiling.  This is getting very frustrating, especially since I just need it to  generate a lighting plan, I don't even need it to look good for a model.  Is there an override to just make it show up, even if it's technically just floating?

Thanks!

If your fixtures are attaching to floors, they're face based instead of
ceiling. Face based families are tricky for those who are not familiar
with. Also, probably your view range isn't right.

To simplify your task, isolate your ceilings while placing the lighting
fixtures.

@sarahgtucker

It is a family behavior Ceiling hosted (Architectural)  ... It does have a lengthy explanantion on one old post on this forum and how one can tweek the Lighting (Architectural family type) in order for it to work consistantly. I will try to find that post and send you the link.

Meanwhile you can use (MEP) Lighting fixtures...those are Face Hosted and shouldn't give you any problems.

If the error is telling you that they can't be coppied, then obviously you have placed at least one and are trying to copy it around. Perhaps you are attempting to copy from one room to another, where you actually are dealing with two separate ceilings. Instead of using the Copy tool, use the Create Similar tool.

This is only one possibility, but it's the one I haven't seen mentioned yet.

Do you have your view range set so that the ceiling is visible in the view?  Meaning, can you select the ceiling from the view?  If not adjust the view range up.

Also check phases.

apparently hosted families cannot be copied unless they're grouped.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.
