Lighting not turning on in Rendering

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi, I am working on a student project and have put in some ceiling pendant lights attached to the ceiling plane, but they are not turning on when I'm rendering. I'm not sure why they're not turning on, I haven't had this issue with light fixtures before.

I've attached a few views of the space, familiy, rendering, and a section. Other lighting is rendering just fine in other views so I'm not sure why this one isn't.

sometimes it's related to the view. There's been threads about this before. Try creating a new view to Render.

I've been rendering to the cloud, so I would think the lights would automatically turn on.

I did just check my rendering settings for artificial lights and all the boxes were checked, and the settings are for interior sun and artificial lights.

I created a new view and the lights are still not on.

light5.JPGThere is one light source in the upper right, so I know lights are turned on, just not sure why this particular light isn't working...?

Want to post your file? It would make it a whole lot easier to troubleshoot.

My project file is too large to attach here. I don't want to have to use another lighting fixture since these ones relate to my concept really well, but I have searched other forums and cannot find a reason why these shouldnt be working.

Sort of adding onto that, I'm curious if it's something with lights embedded in my ceiling? My pendant lights and cove lights are working fine, but these ones and my can lights are the only ones not working? I'm using a compound ceiling with metal studs and gyp board. I just think its odd that just these ones aren't working.

I'm not sure why, but it won't let me attached my family files either... but they're from Fabbian lighting, and its called the Olympic F45 pendant. I'm using the 23", 31" and 54" sizes if that helps at all?

I just downloaded the family and tested. Strange that there is no IES file.  Change the light source definition and it renders fine and dandy.  See if the Manufactures has an IES file for the fixture that  you can download. Betcha they do.  Apply it to the Photometric Web File parameter.

...here's a render of your Fabbian Light Fixture using their F30A01A01.ies file (different light fixture).  Apparently they have no Photometric Web Files for their Olympic pendants. You'll need to use a generic one or use another close match from Fabbian.

Hey, that looks great! So what did you do to make that work? I feel like i don't know anything about lighting, so i'm not sure what an IES file is and how you add it? Or how to change the source definition?

Just open the family and select the light source...

Thank you so much! I really appreciate all your help! It is confusing that Fabian doesn't have an IES for all their fixtures, but adding in a different one worked!

is the generic IES file defining the light source correctly? (shape etc.)

This is quite a work around. There are about 100 IES files that came with Revit with no explanation of what they are. The only way I can figure out what they are is to use the process BarthBradely described above and load each one individually. What a pain.

There must be an easier way out of the box. What is the point of the first two default options (Shape: Point, Distribution: Omni) in the Light Source definition and the generic.ies if they don't do anything? That seems a bit ridiculous to me. There must be an easy way to just use lights out of the box with Point, Omni & Generic just to get some interior lighting done without a bunch of trouble. I just need some simple interior lighting to light up the interior like I used to do in 3DS by adding an invisible light source in the middle of the room. Anyone?
