Any thoughts on what might make a recessed can fixture shine through a material like we see here?

You may be seeing light bounced off of adjacent surfaces onto the wall above--not really "bleeding" through.

As a quick test, try decreasing the light intensity by a very large amount, and see if you still get the "bleed" effect.

Also, see if any materials in the scene have a high-gloss or reflective quality; if so try reducing.

--- If these do not correct it, check to see if the light fixture itself is indeed casting light through the top, and see if an opaque surface/material inside the can light will correct the problem.

try different material.. if that still happens then theres something which is bouncing that lights back...

remove or hide the surface which is bouncing light and re render.
