Large-scale Topography/Toposolids

I'm looking for recommendations / best practices on making large-scale Topography/Toposolids usable.


I have a site model of a university campus, covering roughly 43 acres. This is both a master-planning model and living part of construction documents for multiple projects. As such, there are currently 28 phases, covering existing conditions from 2021 plus 15+ years of anticipated development. The buildings that we have in Revit are linked and phase-mapped, but not directly in this file.
In Revit 2022, this particular model originally has:

  • one 43-acre Topography surface, with ~31K points created from the existing survey's Civil 3D TIN mesh
  • ~200 subregions, attempting to divide that into realistic materials per the survey, abandoned when 1) we realized we couldn't properly use phasing with these, and 2) they started failing to generate because of slightly overlapping edges, etc.
  • ~1000 floors (phased)
    • some with shape editing to match the Topography (via a Dynamo script?), that we migrated towards because of the subregion issues, and because trying to do graded regions or any other editing of the Topography points was unstable and laughably slow, if it worked at all
    • most without shape editing, *very roughly* staggered in elevation to quasi-approximate topography, because we needed to start showing demolition / new construction that didn't align with existing edges, and splitting earlier floors into multiple pieces would wreak havoc on the shape editing

While most of the master-planning is in 2D where these staggered flat floors aren't a huge problem, they do start becoming problematic on the construction documents, and when trying to use this model as the base for renderings.

 

I am trying to upgrade this to newer versions (2026 current target, but open to whatever version would work best) and make it workable using Toposolids, but that too is giving me fits.

  • The single Topography surface, when upgraded and converted to a Toposolid is even more unwieldy for editing
  • Since I couldn't find a way to divide / actually separate Toposolids into multiple pieces to reduce the area/points per piece, I went back to 2022 and divided the original Topography surface into 38 separate pieces. However, when these are upgraded and converted into Toposolids, the boundary edges don't maintain accurate / matching z-coordinates at adjacent pieces.
  • I'm running into the same problem with Toposolid Subdivisions that I had with Topography Subregions; some of them refuse to generate, and some that will generate refuse to be cut from / joined to the primary Toposolid (leaving overlapping graphic artifacts, and hindering the use of Subdivision offsets as desired)
  • Converting all of these floors to Subdivisions is extremely cumbersome, especially since many of the original floor boundaries cross over the separations that were made; one floor might become as many as 5 subdivisions on different toposolids (my Dynamo skills aren't good enough to automate that)
  • I have yet to investigate what effect phasing Subdivisions has on the Toposolids


Before I waste too much more time, any suggestions on what's my best approach to tackle this?
