Why doesn't Revit let you save a backup local before it completely crashes?... I just lost 2 hrs of work
It would if it could.
Meanwhile, set Save Reminder Interval and DO NOT ignore when it pops up asking you to save.
Saving often IS simple.
Not having an autosave feature, that saves in the background while you still can work in the project, is one of the most missing features.
You can vote on a request to make this possible.
Until they provide that feature, manual saving after the reminder is all you can do.
While I don't disagree that auto-save should probably be a feature, why in the world would you go 2 hours without saving? Even in programs that auto-save, I manually save at least every 30 minutes. Hopefully this is a hard lesson learned.
I also sometimes find myself manually saving in Word or Excel, even if it autosaves. So I understand your paranoia
But in Word/Excel the saving only takes as long as the click takes. Revit takes a few seconds during which you can't use Revit. This is annoying and I see how that prevents someone from saving "too often". I realize this is based on file size and network speed etc.
That is why I would hope an Auto-Save in Revit would work in the background while one still can use Revit. Basically, unnoticeable instead of pausing Revit every 15 minutes for a few looooong seconds.
I think OP learned their lesson the hard way. Sometimes that is the best way to remember the lesson....

It'd be nice if that were implemented for all saving, not just the proposed auto-save feature!
Goes without saying. I would hope if they can figure out background-saving it would be the same for manual and auto-saving.
But you are right, one never knows.....
