Is it best to do framing plans with 2d detail componants?

I have heard most people do wood light framing plans for residential construction

with 2d detail lines/components.  Would you agree this is the most practical way

of doing framing plans?  (I have Revit LT and cannot get a wood framing add in)

  • If you do not need to extract material quantities and you need it only for graphic purposes in 2d Views ( Plan and Section Views) then using Repeating Detail Component ( Annotate>Detail Component>Repeating Detail Component) is a good and quick choice as long as Revit LT can not use Addins.
  • If you need material quantities lists and  3d Model , then you can use  Columns and Beams or/and Beam System.
  • you can also use Curtain Walls with Empty Panels placed inside the Wall core.....or you can use , simple Curtain Walls with Solid Panels...

You are probably hearing that from CAD people - not BIM people. If that were true, Revit wouldn't exist.

I made a screencast in which you can see how behaves:

  • the Repeating Detail Component , that is visible only in 2d Views
  • and the 3 d model of the wooden framing , made by using a Curtain Wall with Empty Panels - this is visible both in 3d and 2d views. You can extract material quantities with this method as long as the mullions are seen as wooden linear elements.
