In-model documentation

I would like Revit to let users add documentation to the elements. For example, users should be able to associate elements with references in a form of a short note, url or path to a file on a local file system pointing to project documentation related to a particular element.

For example, as an architect I would like to leave a note to dimension I've added that will point to a diagram in an insurer's/building code guide book explaining the reasoning behind it.

It should work for all Revit elements. AutoCAD had "hyperlink" field for example available on all its elements.

you can add URL to elements or create text  parameters with the file path

Why not do that via an actual Generic Annotation and key it to a Note Block Schedule?

Take a look at the OOTB sample rac_basic_sample_project.rvt

Check out the "issues" add in. I don't know how mature it is, and if it requires ACC, though.

Last time I tried it it looked like it has potential (once it actually works). That was a while ago.

Could you do that to a dimension element though?

Could you hide these annotations when printing sheets though?

They could be useful if you don't want to associate your notes with a particular element, however what if you move elements and forget to move these notes - I'd want some notes to travel with the associated elements.

Absolutely.

FWIW: Annotations are View-Specific.

Cool, I'll give them a try. I'm still concerned that they would need to be hidden by default to avoid confusing other users and I'll start moving elements and forget to move their associated "generic annotations". That's why I think that having such a parameter as a part of every revit element would be simpler for the users.

This is close to what I'm looking for.

Create a Project Parameter (using Shared Parameter) and assign it as an Instance Parameter to every single Category. Then populate those Instance values as needed.  You can pull those Values into Tags and Schedules as well.

Thank you, I didn't think about it. Sadly, you can't do that for dimensions? Dimension category seems to be missing, which is a shame, because this sounds like a solution that I would use a lot. Dimensions are a very important part of a project.

Are you simply trying to add a note to the Dimension?

Ha! Never mind me, @DanielKP2Z9V.  I forget what you are trying to do - that is, find some way to do a Dimension Hyperlink property like AutoCAD.

Yeah, it's a shame dimensions can't be "parametrized" - although I'll accept your answer as a solution as it covers most of the cases (detail items used in construction details for example are something that will benefit a lot from documentation).

I'll open a separate question just regarding dimensions to avoid confusion.
