Importing new walls and floors

I've downloaded a new wall type from http://www.eurobond.co.uk/bim/. The file type is a .RVT Revit project with multiple wall types within the file. I'm trying to save one of the wall types so that i can quickly select it from the drop down menu of walls when i start a new project.

The way i am currently placing the wall is by opening the .RVT file and then copying the desired wall type into my project. The wall then appears in the drop down list, so Revit obviously recognises that it is a wall, however once i have restarted Revit and created a new project this wall is no longer in the drop down menu.

If i try to insert> load family the wall then Revit cant find it as it is not a family, so I think i need to convert the .RVT file into a .RFA file?

I'm having the same issue for floor types. I have downloaded a new floor type from https://www.bimstore.co/search?search=altro&type=product however i cant even copy and insert the floor into a project like i do with the walls. Again i think i need to convert to a .RFA file.

I'm sure this must come up a lot and there is probably a simple solution but I have tried searching this forum and Youtube for answers and nothing seems to be quite what i am looking to do.

Thanks in advance

If you have already gather this Wall type by using Copy/Paste function or Transfer Project Standards, then this Wall type will appear in Project Browser under Families

Hi , Yes it does appear there in the project i have copied the wall type into, and as i say the wall type is available from the walls drop down menu on that project. However when i start a new project it isn't available

If it is listed under Families in Project Browser then you can click here the type and with the left mouse pressed, drag the type on the desktop , press and drag to create the wall.

Again that only works in the project i have copied the wall in to, not in a new project

Have you inserted your wall types into a Template File ?

When opening a New File, do you use this Template?

Hi,

My advice (in short over view) on the process to create your practice specific system families and setting up the project template. Pick the points that relates to your situation.

1. In your Revit Resource library you have a System family folder where the Wall family (and floor) (.rvt) is located. Make a copy of this wall family file and make it a practice specific family. Open the new copy and modify, create or copy in new wall types. Delete wall types that are not relevant to your practice. Save.

2. Make a test copy of your project template file (.rte) (test in isolation before you edit the template on the network). Purge the template of the wall types. Then load in (load as a group) the new wall system family you created in point 1.

3. Make any additional adjustments you need on the walls or floors in the template e.g. type parameters, classifications etc.

4. Save the template

5. Create a new project from the template and test the placement and behaviour of the system families.

6. Book training/CPD on the update for the project teams

7. Roll out the template on the network.

Hope that helps.

If you want to insert the whole Eurobond RVT into another RVT File, as you would a loadable family, go to Insert=>Load as Group, and then locate and select the Eurobond RVT to load into the current Project.

Insert > Load as group worked! I can now insert any wall or floor type which is a .RVT file, I knew it would be a simple solution.

However you would have to do this every time you wanted to insert that wall type into a new project which doesn't make it much quicker than copying the wall into a new project. Constantin's response regarding opening the wall type in your template then saving the template means that any new project created using that template will have the wall/ floor type available from the drop down list.

I will mark barthbradley's response as the correct solution as it answered my first question but you were both correct. Thanks for everyone's input on this 🙂
