Hi,
I have som thougts about IFC and the best way to use IFCs that you get from others in a project. We use different methods in different projects, depending on who is working in those projects. Sometimes we link the IFCs and sometimes we open them and save them as Revit models. We have created a specific template for the IFC conversion, that you set in the IFC Option under Open.
Now I tested with a IFC that came from the construction team in an earlier project. I think the IFC comes from Tekla. The IFC is about 6MB. When I link the IFC, Revit creates a Revit file with 4752 model objects and the size of the model is about 82 MB. If I open the IFC Revit creates a model containing 1906 model objects and the size of the model is about 26 MB. Why is there such a big difference?
And Revit doesn't create the same type of objects. In the Linked IFC revit creates Structural Columns, but in the Open/Save IFC Revit Model revit creates Columns. See images below.
I will test som more with other IFCs to see if the results are the same.

There are two different engines used when opening or linking IFC.
Opening, Revit will try to convert to Revit elements which gives you (limited) possibilities to make edits to the file contents. Linking does a more straightforward process and is more used for referencing/cooridnation purposes.
So this should be the guideline when deciding on opening or linking IFC files.
For more information have a look at the Autodesk BIM Interoperability site. On that page you will also find a link to an IFC manual (PDF) with lots of info.
Quality of importing is also strongly dependent on the quality of the export in the source software.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.
