IFC export gives bad geometry

Hello,

I'm an Mechanical (Autodesk Inventor) Engineer and have little to no experience with Revit.
Thus I'm hoping someone on this forum can help me.

A customer of mine receives IFC files that need to be loaded into a mechanical CAD program.
We have already fixed the problems of loading an IFC and adding a mechanical structure.
But some of the exported components have "issues" we have tried regular IFC and IFC4.

Regular IFC produces strange results on rounded components:

Instead of smooth round parts we get segmented/vertices surfaces.

While viewing the original rvt file in the viewer there are no such problems.

As stated we have already tried IFC4 but we get other problems with that (incorrect holes mostly).

Does anyone of you have an idea that the rootcause of this problem might and if we can fixit via the revit ifc export.

With kind regards

Robert

Robert,

Unfortunately, Revit's ifc export problem is quite limited when it comes to curves. I've reported the issue almost exactly two years ago, and Autodesk since then "has been working on the issue". At the time, Autodesk representative we worked with stated that the development team had identified the root cause, but since it's deep down in the code, it would take "a while" to fully address it.

We use ifc models for structural concrete layout, and had to revert back to 3D cad files for any curved edge because of Revit's shortcomings when exporting to ifc.

Is there any other format that your client can receive and import into his mechanical cad program?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Here is a list of what they can Import.

The only requirement is that the component name is carried over via the file.

So .sat files for example don't work because .sat files don't contain any component specific information.

*edit (I know it says .rvt in the list but I can't import Revit 2022 files yet but those files are to big anyway for easy sharing via the mail)

Out of that list, I think Solidworks and/or rhino file may be the best for the geometry, but I don't know if embedded data for part(s) would be in the exported file.

Sadly the customer uses Revit and is not gonna switch programs.
So I´m looking to improve the quality of the export files.

Just to clarify, I meant to solidworks and/or rhino format for them to import in my previous response not that they should switch programs.

Also, what is the program that exports the ifc, Inventor?
