  • click on the Family object : Modify > Mode > Edit Family
  • in Family Editor : Create> Properties > Family Category and Paramaters - you can see here family category (that was used as family template)

That would only give you the family category that it is currently set to - not the template that was used to create it.

This is something I've wondered about a few times (typcially when reverse engineering a family) and I don't think there is anything stored in the family that actually tells you the template that was used.

For Model in Place Components click on Component > Model > Edit in Place > Modify > Family Category and Parameters - the category is highlighted

You are right.

Anyway,in my opinion,in the work proces ,Category matters...

Absolutely - I'd say it was critical and requires careful thought as it is one of the areas of Revit where personal choice is severely restricted

(I mean why have 'nurse call devices' as a category? I could have been something much more useful!)

@constantin.stroescu haha - you are clearly better at reading between the lines as to what the OP was actually looking for than I!!  :zwinkerndes_Gesicht:

@constantin.stroescu and @Keith_Wilkinson Thank you both for your replies.

I really appreciate your time Constantin, and a video makes all the difference. Thanks a lot.

I also agree with Keith in that it only gives the general family category and not the specific one, and I was trying to "reverse engineer" a family that is made of lots of nested components/families. But at least it is a good start and gives the general information. I understand the process to find the information, but I am mixed for the result as it only gives part of the solution not the full picture.

I also understand Revit my not offer a way to decipher excactly what template was used.

Anyway, again thank you as it helps a lot Smiley (fröhlich)

Well I ran accross this post and it's like two months old but I'm still gonna drop a comment for who ever comes accross it too.

  1. Once the Category is identified (See @constantin.stroescu Screencasts above) one has already identified the template once the family editor opened. Generic has the biggest range of template and once you know the category; All you have to do is look at the Browser and click the reference plane/object to know  the name of the template.

ie: it can't be that the reference is a basic ceiling and its the Generic Model Wall Based.rfa

Click the base reference element in the family and you ll get which template it is:

  • If it's a  family in the conceptual massing mode then it is a Generic Model Adaptive
  • If it's  Basic Ceiling family on the RCP view (see Project browser of the family) then it's Generic Model Ceiling Based
  • If it's an Extrusion element then - it's the Generic Model Face Based
  • If it's a Basic Floor Family on the floor view - it's the Generic Model Floor Based
  • If it's a Reference Line - it's the Generic Model Line Based
  • If it's a a Basic Roof Family on the upper level view - its the Generic Model Roof Based
  • If its two Levels on the elevations - it's the Generic Model Two Levels
  • If its a Wall with placement side - it's the Generic Model Wall
  • If none of the above then its simply the Generic Model.rfa
