How to use Revit model as consultant

I am an architect. Previously, in large architecture firm environments, I have provided content to the Architect's Revit model which I distributed to consultants. This time around I am in the consultant side receiving Revit models from the Architect. How do I create my own consultant file to populate that with my content while being able to align my model to future update(s) from the Architect's Revit model?

Basically it works all the same. You create you own Revit project and then link in relevant Revit files from other parties. In your project you add content that is relevant to the project and then share your file(s) with other parties that would need that information from you.
If not all parties work with Revit then usually you will (also) share IFC files that can be linked into most BIM modelling software.

However to be able to work together efficiently you (or other party) will have to coordinate between the different parties. For example it will help if all parties agree on a certain origin point of the project and what kind of information needs to be included. That is why often parties make use of a BIM documents (e.g. BIM execution plan) where these agreements will be described.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.

Great, thanks! Would I make my (consultant) file using “save as” of the architect’s model to populate that with my content, or, do I create a new blank file with the architect’s model linked in? I’m uncertain if the latter would allow a linked file to host my families’ content.

The second option that you mention. Just begin from a blank file, link the architect's model. Align in x, y, z, acquire coordinates. It is not a good practice to do "save as". You're supposed to have in your model only your scope of work.
