how to upgrade/open the old version of revit files in the new version?

Hi,

how can we open the old version of revit 2015 by the new one, 2019? we can not either open the .rvt files or .ifc.

Thanks

Revit should open a older project into a newer version.  It will upgrade it as it opens.  Sometimes this takes quite a long time, and jumping too many versions can cause issues.  What are the messages you are getting that say you can't open the older version into the newer?  Have you tried to step up the upgrade to 2016 or 2017 first then into the latest version you need?

Dear Jason_S

ye exactly. we have 5 different parts of a project in .rvt and .ifc which are in 2015, 2 .rvt fles we can open in new version BUT, it take not long time, it takes about half of a day, and the other files we can not either open it. can we for example download the 2015 version again?

and no, we did not try to upgrade to 2016 or 2017 and then to latest version, we are not very good in revit by the way.

If you have a subscription to Revit in some form and had access to 2015 before, Autodesk can get you access to 2015 again for download and install.  You have to open a ticket via your Autodesk portal and they should be able to help you.  I have had to do this in the past and there was never an issue.

If you have access to 2016 or 2017 I would try one of the projects you can't open in 2019 and see.  Sometimes there is something in the model that doesn't want to upgrade and going in smaller steps allows it.

We all had and still have trouble in Revit and you will get it.  This forum is a great place to find the answers and see how others handled similar troubles.

Keep in mind that until you get the project fully upgraded, when opening a file, Revit needs to upgrade all the links included in the current file. If the file paths have changed, Revit trying to find those links on a slow network without success might take even longer.

Rob

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

I am not sure if a student account has access to the older versions like a commercial license.  I would login to your Autodesk account and look at your licenses.  There maybe a support link (not familiar with the student side) that should allow you to open a ticket for support.  Again, I am not familiar with the student licenses and how they work.

RobDraw,

Great point.  Thanks for reminding me of the linked files needed upgraded. This can add a lot of addition time.

student support is here: https://www.autodesk.com/education/support/edu-contact-us-form

you also don't say what error your getting when opening the file

you also shouldn't using the student version for commericial work this is against the license agreement you agreed to when you got a student license

errors like ,delete elements or unjoin elements, and if I click on cancel then it goes to close the program.

and some files taking too many time, it has no sense to wait for so long time.
