How to structure a Family for a Modular Lighting Range?

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to build a family of downlights which have modular components that plug into the main fitting to give additional functionality e.g. a smoke detector or sprinkler. This is my first time using Revit so I need to know if what I am trying to do is possible first.

I am still getting my head around Revit and the Family system, but it seems to me that my family needs to be able to hide and show solid bodies when switching to different members of the family in order to change the plugins. I will also need to be able to swap out the IES photometry files when switching between members of the family. Can you shed some light on this or point me towards an appropriate resource?

Can this be made so that a Revit user can select a generic downlight (without an extra module), then whilst positioning they could select their desired SKU and have it automatically change in that instance from one family? Or does every SKU need to be a different family?

Less urgently, I have also been asked if we can create photometry files that represent sprinkler coverage in order to have them automatically provide the 80% sprinkler coverage specified by relevant standards. DIALux and Relux give you this functionality when creating lighting designs to automatically distribute lighting positions depending on the space. Does this functionality exist in Revit and if so could we take advantage of it in an intuitive way for Revit users?

Any help with this would be massively appreciated.

Wow! A lot to unpack here.  Overall though, it sounds like you are describing a prefect application for Revit Lookup Tables.

...just a thought: you might want to Google for Manufacturer Revit Content and do some "reverse-engineering" of their families.

...basically, this is all about nesting and sharing and associating parameters between families.
