How to show a piece of furniture under a piece of furniture

Please see image

I want to place this pen-drawer locker under the desk, and I want to show that there is the locker underneath the desk without hiding it... Is there a way to do this?

Thanks

Aidan

The best way to do it is to edit the desk family, nest the drawer (make it a shared family if you want to document it on tables and such), then add a projection annotation in the desk family that portrays the drawer underneath. If you need to parametrize it, work your way through reference planes, parameters and such, locking everything and making both drawer and annotation change dimensions as needed.

You cannot apply transparency directly to the annotation family, so you'll have to use filters or manually override specific objects. To do that, change the annotation of the desk family from Masking Region to Filled Region, and apply a transparency filter specifically to that type.

In that sense, the projection is a better practice in my opinion, because you have less trouble throughout views, and because it's the correct order of things given the plan cut height. You can always show more details in a Legend or 3D View of some specific elements that are projected or hidden.

If these two families will always be shown like this, whether its multiples in this project or if this is a standard setup you use in multiple projects, then editing the family is the way to go.

If this is a one time condition, sometimes its best to just draw some detail lines manually. People certainly overdo this in the BIM world, but sometimes its still the best solution.

Add a ref plane in the locker family at an elevation higher than the desk, draw hidden style symbolic line on that ref plane (by set work plane), uncheck Draw in Foreground. Now you should see the locker presents by hidden lines under the desk in the project

You can place Symbolic Linework underneath other other Symbolic Linework by unchecking Draw in Foreground. When this option is not selected, the Symbolic Linework is drawn on the work plane on which it was sketched.
