How to keep view templates updated when new subcategories are being added continuously?

Hello

I have been encountering a problem which costs hours of time every week in our office.

We use view templates for all views, and invest a lot of time into those templates. However, when we add, for example, a new CAD link to the project, which we do often as part of our coordination with consultants, the V/G Overrides Imported Categories part of every View Template is now out of date, because that CAD Link should be not visible in all but a handful of drawings. That means I have to go through every template (which number in the dozens) and turn that CAD link off. There has to be a way to default new CAD links to off in all views/view templates? (Note: linking the CAD file to This View Only is not what I am looking for)

A more nuanced version of this problem is where I do want the CAD link visible in most or all views, but with specific layers not visible, or perhaps with overrides applied to certain layers. There doesn't seem to be a way to copy paste these detailed settings for the V/G overrides of a specific CAD link from one template to another, costing absurd amounts of minutes and clicks.

We also have these problems with other custom subcategories for our generic model elements we route from Rhino, which is a different story, but essentially the same problem.

What am I missing? These problems seem to poke a huge hole in the concept of template-based efficiency. I can use a plugin, Dynamo or PyRevit if there is no native support.

Another way of asking this is are there tools for batch management of View Template V/G overrides?

Thank you all for your help.

Brian

Have a quick look at my blog post and see if it describes what you're asking about. If it does then making sure the DWG file's XREF's are assigned to a unique layer your views and view templates can turn off will keep much of the "noise" off.

There are at least a couple of add-ins that can update multiple view templates with the same settings.
