When importing into 3dsmax there is an option to combine by material, is there a way write an fbx directly out of revit with attributes based on materials so i dont have to go into 3dsmax just to re-export? Thankyou!

I believe there an Add-in that can do this.  Check the Store.

You do not need 3dsmax.. If the material has been assigned to each object/element in Revit, exporting to FBX will exports the material parameter as well... Not sure what you mean by grouping though

vimaec.com can do this, it will also rebuild all the ridiculous meshes in a proper manner so that triangle counts go down dramatically, usually it's 1/3 of the traditional FBX triangle count.

You can also group by combination of workset, model link, category, etc.
