How to determine the material which has been painted on a stair

I am trying to use the remove paint command to hover over these stairs and determine what material has been painted on them although it hasn't been working. I am able to hover over other walls/surfaces in the model and determine the material but it doesn't seem to be working for the stair treads. Does anyone have an alternative method for determining material or know why this isn't working for the stairs?

It works the same way for stairs. Maybe they aren't Painted. Maybe the color is coming from the Material assigned to the Treads.

Is it possible to paint stair treads/risers? I can assign a material the way @barthbradley showed, and I can paint stringers & railings but not treads/risers.

You should be able to. What version of Revit are you using?

I just tested it in the project I was working on and it didn't work. It's an old one that has been upgraded from Revit 2010 so I'm going to blame that. I can do it when I start a new project.
