How to copy/paste a group of elements keeping associated dimensions and tags?

Hi everyone,

I am building this Revit file containing different group of elements representing every possible configuration of a curtain wall, in this way I will have a library of assemblies that I can easily copy and paste to compose the layout of curtain walls very quickly.

A big enhancement would be to keep the associated aligned dimensions and tags when copying the elements both in elevation such as in plan view.

The problem is that I can not manage to copy the element keeping both the plan and elevation detailing, Revit allows me to keep either the plan detailing or the plan one.

Is there a way to make a sort of assembly (such as the one highligted in yellow in the pic) that when copied will keep the detailing (dimensions and tags) in plan and elevation (and all other views)?

Big thanks

I think it is possible, using groups (model groups plus attached detail groups).

Are there 2 views in that image? Are those 2 different viewports? What type of view is that? Drafting, model, legend?

Hi @Alfredo_Medina!

Those are two viewports in a sheet, one plan view (actually a call out of a plan) and one elevation view, with their respective detailing.

My point is that I need to make assembly that can be copied and adjusted to the situation, therefore probably I should not make a actual Revit group, as it would be a block.

What do you mean with attached detail group?

The attached group is a detail group that is attached to a model group. For example:

Model group "Walls" with attached detail group "Detail Group A":

When I select all the walls and all the annotations, Revit separates the two types of content as shown in that dialog box above. That means that I can combine the same model group with other attached details group, "B", "C", etc. For example, here I modified the model group "Walls" by adding a door, and I created other detail groups "B", and "C".

Now the next time I create a new instance of my model group, I have the option of clicking on "Attached Detal Groups"

and select one, two, three, or more attached detail groups,

to present the same model group with different annotations.

Thank you @Alfredo_Medina, very interesting.

Is it possible to attach details in plan view and also in elevation, and other views at the same time?

BTW unfortunately I can't use groups as I need to make small modification in the length of the curtain walls for each instance.

Any other option to achieve that?

Yes, it is possible to attach detail groups in plan and elevation to the same model group. You need to use the Attach Detail Group tool separately, one time per view.

Hi @Alfredo_Medina,

Is there a way to keep details when copying elements, beside Revit groups?

For example if I put a dimension on the wall on the left and then copy and paste, the dimension is not following the item, neither in plan nor in elevation.

Is there a way to achieve that other than making a group of the wall and attaching the detail?

Because I need to have the element on the right to be stretched and modified, but keeping the dimension (of course parametrically changing the length).

I don't understand what else to say about this.  I have a wall with a dimension, and I select both elements and copy them, either with the Copy tool or with Copy-Paste tool, I get a new instance of the wall with the dimension.

In what situations this is not working?

One model group can only associate with one detail group. And, you can not have annotation on both plan and elevation in one detail group. So, you have to pick one or another, either the annotation on plan, or the annotation on elevation, but not both.
