Hi,

I have a huge 3D model file. Too big to handle !

How can I convert this file into ifc file and make it smaller size  so I can link with revit model ?

Hi @Anonymoush

I see that you are a new visitor. Welcome to the Autodesk community! Smiley Happy

As the first step, I would recommend the below:

  • Do a fresh clean up of your cad file (recommended before you link)
  1. Check for xrefs and bind them to the drawing, using the Insert option to prevent redundant layers.
  2. Run SETBYLAYER. This command removes any color, linetype, or lineweight overrides from objects.
  3. Run PURGE. This command removes any unused layers, linetypes, blocks, and styles.
  4. Freeze any layers you don’t need.
  5. Save the Cad file and try linking it again in Revit.

Hi Viveka,

Thanks for your tips. It is really helpful in general practice to reduce the file size.

Is there anyway I can convert .dwg file into .ifc ?

Regards.

Dharam.

Hi @Anonymous

The core AutoCAD program does not support the IFC file format and is not able to export to this file format.

However, some AutoCAD verticals like AutoCAD Architecture or AutoCAD MEP have an IFC Export feature built in.

Use one of the AutoCAD verticals like AutoCAD Architecture or AutoCAD MEP to export the DWG file to the IFC file format.
Alternatively, Revit supports the DWG file format and is able to link and/or import this file format into a Revit project directly.

See the Revit workflow here: Link an AutoCAD File

Hope that helps.
