I want to add a box that represents a header for door and window families that adjusts to the opening width. I want to be able to turn this off and on with it being off by default. How would one do this?
I'm guessing this is related to your other post. There are two parts to this. Drawing/modeling the headers, and then controlling their visibility.
Drawing them is relatively straight forward. My guess is you can get by just by drawing detail lines, and constraining them to reference planes that determine the width and depth of the window/door. There are plenty of videos on Youtube for things like this if you need more detail.
There are a couple of ways to control the visibility.
1) Add a yes/no parameter that is linked to the visibility of the element. This will control the visibility in the entire project though. So for a given window, its either on or off everywhere. Can't be customized by view.
2) Apply a specific subcategory to these elements. You can then determine if these elements are hidden or showing with the v/g overrides of a given view or a view template. My assumption is that this is probably the route you'd want to go.
I added the detail item as a region without masking and set it to a new subcategory but when I turn it off it still masks

I added a nested detail item family but the region's masking is greyed out and I can't control its visibility. Can someone help fix the attached family?
you can use the attachment , if i understand your problem well.
Scratching my head here. Why would you show the Door Header in Plan View? How is that graphical information helpful?
Thanks but I need the region to only show up in my framing plans and nowhere else
This is for a framing plans where I need to diagrammatically show headers. All I'd like to do is add a white transparent box to windows and doors that adjust to wall framing thickness and door/window widths. I'd also like the box to be turned off in all views except my framing plans.
What about using Subcategories to control the elements Visibility?
this is impossible in this way, that means with family and detail Item, may be possible but it is annoying,
the variable of visible is work in all of the project in all views, but you can use the group and attachment details.
you can make the group from the door alone and make the attachment details. you can on and off in all views.
