I created a generic model family and I need to add a door to my family, but it won't place. I think it's because I chose generic model when cresting instead of generic face based or generic wall based.

I am creating a family and I chose generic model to model a structure, however I need to add a few doors and it will not place. I figured it's because I chose generic model, is there a way to place the door in the walls?

Doors can be added only to walls. If you are going the route you are going with, I think the way to do this is this:

  • Create a void cutout in the generic family size of the door and frame
  • draw a wall in that void
  • add a door to that wall, and the door with the frame will take up the entire length of the wall making it disappear leaving you with a door in your generic family

Thank for the suggestion! However I forgot to mention that the walls are extrusion with parameters. Is it possible to add doors and windows without having to recreate this structure in a new family category?

So I played around with what you are doing, and this is what I came up with.

  • Create another generic family which will be with the size of the cutout. See pasted image, I made a red block for my generic "cutout" family
  • Place where you want the cutout to happen (can be in multiple locations)
  • Go to ribbon -> modify tab -> Cut and select both families (The one cutting and to be cut)
  • Hide the cutting family (my red block)
  • Place a wall with the door into as my previous post said

I believe you could use this method to create a kind of super family that has a variety of nested components including doors:

You can change a wall based door family to a face based door family then you will be able to place it in the generic model family.
