How much the Revit server help?

We have offices on different towns(about 500 km between) and we experience problem when we sync Revit work sharing project especially when the Internet is slow. Sometimes it takes more than 20 minutes to sync a file that usually takes a few minutes. We are planning to use Revit server now but we don't know exact how much the improvment

will be. Any body with a practical experience av such condition can help?

Thank you for your answer. I want to hear about a practical experience about how much the Revit server speed up the sync over a WAN.

I don't have experience in Revit Server, however I have experienced the HUGE difference between working a shared model through a WAN versus BIM360 Design (cloud-based). The cloud-based BIM360 Design completely eliminates lag time for syncing, it's like night and day compared to the WAN method. What I don't know is how cost of Revit Server compares to BIM360 Design, which is still fairly high. If you can afford it, I highly recommend it, it takes care of the problem.

Having a RevitServer in each office helps ALOT!  Used to work for a worldwide company that had a server in (mostly) every office.  So I was able to help out on projects in California, Texas and Alaska while I was in Washington.

Basically when you save you are saving to your local Revitserver which then takes the time to sync with the other RevitServers....Of course the issue is deciding which server the model is actually hosted on.  I always set it up by whoever is going to work the most on a project they get to be the host.

Two things are required to optimize your office WAN - WAN Optimization hardware/software like Riverbed Steelhead products and Revit Server. The first piece ensures you have the least possible latency between offices and servers (assuming you aren't significantly limited by your ISP connection). Revit Server optimizes the passage of Revit data between offices and in particular it manages the permissions related to individual borrowing.

Revit Server without Riverbed (or similar) fewer ownership issues during synchronization but the sync times probably won't change much/significantly.

Riverbed without Revit Server - better/faster data transactions but will not manage user permissions so conflicts/locking can still occur.

The cost to implement the hardware/software and support it is one of Autodesk's argument for using their BIM 360 hosting for Revit projects instead.
