How long should it take to open an IFC model?

IFC files are taking anywhere from 30 mins to well over a hour to convert/open in Revit. We're having to download a new one each week to keep in line with the latest architects model.

How long should it really take? It seems like its taking longer than it should, this is an issue across multiple projects, even with different services such as structural and mechanical models we have to download as well.

Linking the IFC in revit also gives the same issue and it still essentially converts it into Revit usable file.

Our computers are supposed to be of a high grade to use Revit, anyone had similar issue or is this a typical thing??

As a generic rule of thumb though, do IFC files take ages to convert/link/open?

That will depend on the detail of IFC...

here are some options while exporting..

Is there anywhere you can see what level of detail the ifc was exported in ?  -So we don't have to find out the hard way every time?

what is file size ? and is it zip file or normal IFC?

• Did you remove unnecessary elements, reduce detail levels?
• Did you check Export only element visible in view
• Check the doors and windows some family use the real profile with too detaily model and this is make the problem, check the mechanical element too or all of models.
• Check the site if you have,to sure you don't have big model or massive solid model.

I had this problem before , we change our hardware and now it is not anymore.

open it first in Revit and link the revit link to your project not IFC direct.

The Issue is not exporting an IFC, it's importing one not generated by us.

We do not know how it was made and what is inside it until we try to poen it.
We get files from various architects and customers with various degrees of revit skills.

I'm just a designer so  I won't get far trying to teach architects anything.

I was just wondering if we could rely on something other than luck, when trying to import IFC other people make...
