How does Lumion associate Revit materials?

So im trying to render a model built in Revit that i imported into Lumion. When rendering in Lumion if you render a material that is used in mulitple parts of the model it will change that material everywhere.

I am rendering carpets at the moment. To try and get around the problem above just duplicated the carpet material in Revit, eg i went into the family edited the structure then duplicated the material carpet. This did nothing Lumion is still changing all the carpets if edit the material on one of them ?

What is the best way to get around this? I mean i could just create all the carpets in revit with completely different materials associated to them eg brick, wood, plastic but this will get really messy?

Help please thanks

You need to duplicate or replace the Appearance Asset in order for Lumion to recognize the changes (switch to Appearance tab when edit the material).

You need to change the Appearance's ASSET. If you open the Appearance tab of your carpet material, you'll see a little hand icon at the top. Likely is shows more than "1".  Probably "2".  You want to create a new Asset by duplicating that Asset and assigning the new Asset to your Material.

Isnt that the same as just duplicating the material in the materials menu?

I managed to get it working anyway.

So you think that is the parameter that Lumion uses to differentiate materials? That appearance asset?

In the Screenshot I posted above, Carpet (2) is a duplicate of Carpet (1) - yet they still share the same Asset. Change any of the Appearance tab settings, and those settings will be applied to both Carpet (1) and Carpet (2).   So, in answer to to your question: No. Duplicating a Material is not the same.

BTW: if the Material is missing in Revit, then it is missing from the Lumion Rendering. Lumion will alert you to this before rendering.

And do you no the best way to do a custom carpet pattern modelled in revit for lumion?

So Lumion doesnt recognise detail lines.

I need to do a complex hexagon pattern carpet with different colours all through it?

Thanks

Custom Image.  That's how I usually roll. Google around for a swatch to your liking.  Carpet images are usually pretty easy to find and use directly in Revit -- without needing to Photoshop it first.

Cool thanks.

What functions do you use in revit to do that ? Sorry im a bit of a newb. So you find the carpet image (a real life photo) and upload it into a material that is allready there ?

So yeah what format does the image have to be in (jpeg?) and where do i input input it and assign it to something (an existing material or something else)

There are lots of carpet appearance assets included in the Revit Appearance Asset browser.  You may find something works for you.

Most any image file will work (i.e. jpg, pnf, tif, bmp, etc). Find an image on-line and download it. Best to put it in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Materials\Textures\1\mats folder.  Once downloaded, go into Revit Materials and  duplicate an existing "Carpet" Asset and apply it to a new material. Then under the new material's Appearance tab, click on the existing image's name (just below image), and locate the image you downloaded.   That's the nuts and bolts.  You'll need experiment with different Texture Editor settings -- mainly Scale -- to get it the image tiling to look right. The Texture Editor is accessed by clicking on the Image itself.

Have fun.
