How do you apply a material with a thickness to different faces and objects?

Hi everyone,

how do you apply a material with the thickness, similar to the paint command?

For example in a swimming pool concrete tank I want to apply a PVC membrane on the floor (that could have different slopes), on the internal walls, on the internal stairs, etc.

I know that I could apply a finish layer to walls and floors, but what about internal stairs (created as model in place component)? I have to create an extrusion for the stairs and an extrusion above for the PVC membrane? There isn't a faster procedure?

Thank you in advance for any tips

Since something that thin (1/16" or so?) won't even show up in a section at a smaller scale than 1:10 (about 1" = 1'), there does not seem to be any point at all in trying to model the membrane as a building element. And Revit does not have a Surface > Thicken tool like AutoCAD's to use, anyway.

In what kinds of views do you intend to show the membrane?

  • Building plans and sections: Keynote saying "PVC membrane on all surfaces, etc."
  • Detail sections: Draft the membrane with a wide line or use the Linework tool to change the edges of the wall/step material to a wide line. Add keynote.
  • Renderings: Paint the sides, floors, and steps.

How thick is this Membrane Layer? Do you really need to model it? Why?  Is so, model it the same way you modeled the stairs.

Thanks for your reply.

It is 2 mm thick.

I do not really need to model it, I just wanted to be as consistent as possible, so that even in sections or wall call-out I can show that membrane and "tag" it.

Since our suppliers gave us the material libraries for the membranes I'm currently applying it as "paint" in order to get good realistic/render views and more important to compute the square meters of the membrane we need in the project.

Also with the "paint" command it is very easy to apply it to stairs, faces etc.

I was just wondering if there would be a better or alternative solution since I'm not a very advanced user using revit

I am pool contractor in san antonio and was facing the same issue for one of my client project at his villa swimming pool. Thank you for this detailed solution. It also worked for me as well.
