How do I create a vertical workplane so I can edit extrusion on a vertical face?

I am working with a Revit family of a shipping container that I downloaded off of RevitCity, I have been able to edit extrusion and create voids in the top of the container but now that I am trying to create voids in the vertical faces Revit will not let me edit because the workplane is to sharp in the elevation view and it will not let me select any other workplanes. Does anyone have any advice on how to create voids for windows and doors?

if the are extrusions, you can also place them in plan view and extrude upwards.

otherwise;

  1. Go to plan view or a lateral elevation and place a ref plane then on the properties pallet Name it.
  2. once you switch back to the elevation where you are placing the void, set the work plane and select the one you created in step 1

When I created a ref plane it did not show up as an option to set as work plane.

You need to select it and give it a name. Only named ref planes can be set as work planes.
