How can I create different disciplines groups for plans in Revit

Hello,

I am using the Revit 2015 version (the one that has Arch, MEP and Structure). My question is the following.

Since I started using Revit, I only used it for Architectural, but now that I want to use both MEP and Structure features, and be able to look at different kind of sheets for each part of the project I don't know where I can group the discipline plans in the project browser.

For example, when I work with Architectural Template, I have groups for Floor Plans, Ceiling Plans and Elevations. But how can I create groups for HVAC, Plumbing, etc.?

Thanks in advance and sorry if the question is a bit messy, I am rather new in using Revit

You should create seperate file for Architecture, Structure & MEP discipline, & then link them togather for coordination. There are lots of way in which you can create sheets once you are linking the files togather.

Hope this helps:)

In a sense you can not 'create' groups in the project browser.

Further it is important to make a distinction between views and sheets. In the project browser they are organized differently.

The groups will become visible when you add a view. For example you will not see the 'group' Sections until you add a section view.

Basically the project browers shows and filter your views on certain parameters of the views. You have (some) control over how the views will be fitlered and displayed by using the browser organisation (under view tab).

In the window that wil pop-up you can change how the browser organizes your view and sheets.

You can further refine your organisation by adding parameter(s) to your views and sheets which you then can use in the browser organisation

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.

I do arch and mep all in one file. You can organize your views by discipline if you like, but I don't bother. Naming them well is good enough for me. I just created my sheets with a "SORT-BY-THIS" parameter and tell Revit to sort the sheets by it. If you could scroll down in this picture you would find the M sheets, the E sheets, the P sheets, etc., all where they belong, in order.

Enlit, isn't this essentially creating "groups" in the project browser? I mean I could create sheets with a top level sorting parameter and a second level sorting parameter, and have, for example, all the C sheets grouped together in the right order, then all the A sheets, then the M sheets, then the E sheets... see what I mean? Groups.

Thanks, but how do you generate the MEP views and sheets in the very same file?

I'm not sure I understand your question. I take the 1st floor Arch plan - for example - and I duplicate it several times, renaming and changing the discipline as is appropriate to create, for example, a 1st floor Elec Pwr plan, a 1st floor Elec Lgt plan, and so on and so forth for all the plans I need. Then on some of them - like the lighting plan and an hvac plan with overhead ductwork, the view ranges need some adjusting. Also I like to adjust line weights by category for several things in my MEP views. I also like to have certain things turned off altoghether in some views, for example I don't want elect wiring showing up in my underfloor plumbing plan and I don't want my water pipes/fittings showing up in my elect power plan. So I've got view templates, that I apply to some of these new views, to "pre-set" those things to be the way I like them.

I should say that this works for me, and is most efficient/convenient for me, only because I'm doing it all myself. If you're coordinating different people in different office locations then you won't want just a single local file like this.
