How can i assign multiple color to a family in REVIT MEP

Hello, I want to give different colors or shade to a hosted electrical outlet family. say when i place the outlet on wall the face should be yellow and the part inside the wall i want to see it in red. Need you suggestions on how to do so. Thanking all in advance for your valuable comments and suggestions and help, and more important taking your valuable time for suggestion. Thank You, Lince.

Two ways -

1) to PAINT each part with a different material (which may not be a global solution for the family you are creating)

2) go into Manage >> Object Styles. Create Sub-Categories. You can then create sub-categories in Electrical Equipment or Electrical Fixtures for components and give them different colors and materials

Hi @Anonymous

Option 1

My first choice would be to assign different material Parameters to the different components of the the Family...Select/Edit the Family

to go to Family Editor

  1. Select each component (face plate/core) and on the Properties Palette assign/add a type Parameter for each component
  2. Repeat for nested components of any
  3. Save and reload into the Project

Option 2

Paint can also be applied in Family Editor as a Material and assigned with a Parameter (usefull when you want to assign several material/colors to the same component - Example: Front face Yellow and Edges Red) - To do so, Select/Edit the Family to go to Family Editor

  1. Go to Family Types Dialog box
  2. Add a Type Parameter / Material / sort under Graphics
  3. Click Ok
  4. Use the Paint tool from the ribbon (Under modify)
  5. From the paint dialog; select the material which you just made (it will have a suffix “Param” next to it)
  6. Pick the surfaces to paint
  7. Click ok; save and reload into the project

Now your paint has associated with a type parameter and has a global impact on all instances of the same type

Option 3

Using subcategories - can be powerful yet may get crubersome and had to manage. I personally try to avoid using subcategories for material control. Especially when some families may contain shared nested components of different categories. Also in Family Editor -

  1. Add new subcategories
  2. Select each component and on the properties pallete set it to the designated subcategory you have created
  3. Repeat for nested components if any
  4. Save and reload
