Help ASAP Please: Can't Create a Surface Form

I've been trying to create a surface form when using In-Place Mass, either by drawing them or by picking existing model lines, but every time I do, it doesn't become a solid surface form and gives me the mesh geometry error.

Also on the online Revit guide (link attached), it mentions that there's a Form panel when I'm in the Modify | Lines tab; however, there's no such thing in mine.

I run Revit 2023; I'm on the educational license for students.

I tried doing it from a new file. I restarted the program and the laptop multiple times. I even uninstalled the program and reinstalled it. Yet the same issues persist.

The videos I'm following have no such issues, and they run older versions (2013 & 2020 in both videos). They can create solid surface form and don't get the mesh geometry error.

There is nothing wrong there. This is not an error it is just a prompt to  inform you that what you created is a mesh geometry, it has has a surface but no volume since you only picked 1 line. You can still use it to apply a Wall By Face

If you wish to have some mass with a volume, select more than one line ... see example below

Hello @RDAOU

First of all, thank you so much for replying back and for taking the time to demonstrate!

I have given the line some thickness just like you have done as a temporary measure; however, when I'm editing the mass and dividing the surface in the shape I want, it divides up all sides of the form as it's not a surface solid but a 3D solid. I have also tried to divide the mesh surface as it is but it doesn't work well.

Also, I have attached (GIF)  a snippet of the video I'm following in order to create the facade I want.

And here he uses a line and then it turns to a surface form without it being a mesh geometry and when he divides the surface it works well with him.

And according to the revit online guide (PNG) it shouldn't turn to a mesh geometry, or at least that's what I understood.

From a half clip I cannot tell much but if he is working in Conceptual Mass Environment / Family.... there Revit will not pop up that prompt

  • To use that mode go to File >> New >> Conceptual Mass >> select the template Mass.rft (See GIF below)
  • When you are done with this and you would load into a Revit model, then you will get the prompt again

You can also do the same using in place Mass. You need to divide the surface before you finish the in Place instance (See GIF below)...If streaming, recording or just because warnings bother you, they can be set to pop on a different screen and there is also a way to supress them ie: not to pop at all, but that is not recomended for beginners. The user need to see and understand what is going on...you should not worry about that warning because you are not going to mass floors! you are creating a curtain wall elevation

Thank you so much @RDAOU !

I avoided adding external links initially because I don't know if I'm allowed to or not but in the videos (yt links below), they seem to be working in a project file and not a family. They're running older versions though, so I don't know if they never got errors; or like you said they were set to pop up in a different screen.

Another thing, how can I select one panel? (like in the GIF)  When I try to do so by pressing tab, it doesn't work. I've tried to do so on both surfaces and 3d solid but it doesn't work.

This is not an error! common...it is just a popup informing you that this particular surface you created is not usable in Massing Foors. Unless you are going to populate floor simply ignore it. Hidden or not it is NOT AN ERROR I swear to god it isnt!

Now you are moving to a new topic...this is not dividng the surface this is applying a pattern to the surface. those are two different techniques for modeling elevations. This one goes in parallel with Generic Model Pattern Based components.

Peace of advice...Find a better source for Revit Learning. And any channel with 50 commercials poping up in in a 15 mins tutorial is 99.99% of the time as cheap as the commercials. Even if it has 10 million subscribers.

My bad. I understand it's not an error; It's just I'm used to calling them as such since most of them were actually errors when I started using Revit.

Alright I will do as such. Thank you so much for your help! I thought I was doing something wrong when I was working.

Yes, I will; thanks!
