Guide Grids

I am starting to use guide grids more and more every day. But is there a way to get a guide grid from one revit file to another, even if that other file is linked in to it? I am trying to get the linked mep model(s) to have the same plan position on the page.

You can use Transfer Project Standards (TPS) > select Guide Grids

You can also select a sheet (in the Project Browser) that has a guide grid on it > right click - copy to clipboard (though it must be an empty sheet or at least no model views to work)

Then in the other project CTRL+V (Paste) to load that sheet with the guide grid into the project.

I'd just use TPS 🙂

I guess the only concern with that is that you cannot have both models open, to use the transfer project standards, if the models are both linked to each other.

Sure you can, Revit just needs you to temporarily unload (NOT remove) the other linked file. You can reload it right afterward.

Once the MEP model is linked in, just move/rotate it where it needs to go, then publish coordinates from your file back to the linked file. This won't do anything with grids, but it will in future always load into the right place.

Since you've brought it up...

If a model is linked in via Auto-Origin to Origin there is no reason or need to Acquire Coordinates. That's only necessary if the data needs to be exported so it will align with other data from other sources in another application like Navisworks.

Most Revit to Revit model relationships will work perfectly well if we could just get people to use Origin to Origin when they start the project. Somebody has to be the "lead dog" though. Whoever starts the project should take on that role and see it through.

Shared coordinates only needs to be invoked when there is an expectation that a variety of sources of design data must align according to some other notion of alignment (shared coordinates), usually the survey data from the site/survey civil engineer.

Since his issue is Guide Grids  and not related to Shared Coordinates I'd avoid clouding the matter with a separate feature. 🙂

You're certainly correct, Steve. I just thought it might help him achieve his goal...depending on the circumstances, of course.
