Graphic Override of Groups using a Selection Set Filter

I am working on a project with repeating residential units. Each unique unit configuration is a model group.

To keep it simple for all office staff, I want to be able to halftone all of the units on a plan without using Worksets or Dynamo scripts.

I first selected all of the unit model groups and created a selection set (When I load the selection set, it selects all of the unit groups, as expected). Then, I created a filter based on that selection set. However, when I check the "halftone" option for the filter, nothing happens. Curiously, when I uncheck "Visibility", the model elements within the group remain visible, but I am no longer able to select those elements as a group, even though they are still grouped; I can only select individual elements to exclude them from the group.

I also tried creating a selection set and filter of ungrouped model elements, and the filter functions perfectly.

I am able to select groups manually, even multiple groups, and successfully Override Graphics in View>By Element>Halftone. So Revit does have the native ability to change the graphics of all elements within a group. The selection set filter should do it, but for some reason it just doesn't.

I'm guessing I've hit a dead end with this. Any thoughts?

Hi

Without using A. Workset B. Dynamo

( just a quick note about Model Group, It doesn''t help to filter , select and creates more problem when used multiple times and at multiple levels...Groups is fine in many cases but doesnt seem to work in your requirement )

Can you consider using...

A. Revit link

B. using Phase

1. Converting Model Group to Links ( Revit Links can be converted to model group, and similarly Model group can be converted to Revit link )... and its easy to halftone one link type in VG eliminating the problem with group where its impossible to filter typical model group...

group-link.JPG

2. Other option is if you are ready to use "Phases "as long as you put model elements in particular Phase

and assign material ( grey, halftone, colored, hatch anything ) this can help you segregate / filter elements the way you want...

Bit learning curve to fix a. Phase b. Phase Filters c. Phase of View. d Graphics override

Unfortunately, using Links is not a workable solution. We are constantly changing the profile of the building envelope, and we need to be able to see the exterior and corridor walls when we are modifying the units and vice-versa. We could ditch the notion of halftoning the units altogether, but we find it helpful to highlight priority of construction (core and shell, demising, corridor, shafts, etc) and for legibility. Additionally, we may have 15, 20, or even 30 unique unit configurations, and it would be a hassle to manage so many links. We have tried using phases before, but in my opinion this is even more complicated for the average user than Worksets.

Selection set VG override would tick all the boxes but it simply does not work for whatever reason. We are trying a Dynamo script but I've found it is not "permanent" - if we add or subtract units, or modify the groups, we have to re-run the script, and our staff isn't familiar with this process (an issue which we may need to address).

Thank you for the suggestion. Will try to come up with some more outside of the box solutions.
