Give feedback early when Save is disabled

I would like Revit to notify me when it has decided to disable the save function, preferably directly after i open my file.  Or, at least then I press the save shortcut keys.  Today I  ctrl+s-ed to my hearts content, only to find that my model was not, in fact, saved when i opened it the next time.

Is the file workshared? If so, you would have only saved to your local copy and not the Central File.

that is because the Revit was busy with calculate, in other mean that was a calculate was going on. sometimes you can see in the background processes and sometimes not. thats happen when you work with some heavy work like Steel connection or etc.
and use all shortcut or other commands one time and wait for the first command finished.
thast is my experience.

You make it sound like it happens alot. How are you closing the models?

Unless you are using task manager to close the model, Revit does notify you when you attempt to close it without saving.

This was honestly the first time.  I typically close all my tabs to close the project. 

In my frustration, I left out an important detail.  I didn't close the program at all; it crashed (also unusual for me).  When i opened again i of course realized that the work hadn't been saving.  and i looked in the menu and saw "save" greyed out.  I then did a test.  I moved some annotation items and ctrl+s-ed.  the date stamp in file explorer did not change.  So the file was not saving.    I assume save was also greyed out before the crash, but i do not know for sure.

The file was workshared, yes. But I was working directly in the central model.  Bad workflow, I know, it's not my  preference.  So, no local file here, but I did double check that, too.

You made it sound like it happens all the time and is repeatable. Not sure why you are asking for something that exists.

I can’t think of any reason why anyone would need to be intentionally in a central model. I’ve been maintaining models for over ten years and I can’t remember the last time I thought it was necessary.

sorry to hear that happened to you, didn't you get a warning when closing Revit that the file has changes that weren't changed or sync'd?

I do remember that the Plugin Site Designer (AutoDesk plugin) caused this issue. We stopped installing it from R2018 and higher. It's no longer available from R2022 I think.

Or was Revit in viewer mode, no save option and doesn't give a warning on closing (does give a message when starting the Viewer that it's in Viewer mode)

Do not work directly in the central file. Only time you should ever be in the central file is when it first gets created. 

this should not be a "preference" - sorry. If the central file gets corrupt, it will take some effort to correct this - and jsut think of all of the lost time!!
