get and control parameters from nested

I made a detail family with a few nested detail families. How do I get the parameters from the nested family into the parent / host family and control them there? I tried making a parameter with the same name, and it doesn't do anything.

nevermind, i figured it out. I had to select the nested family, and then click the button next to the parameter in the properties panel

You need to create new parameters in the parent family, and then select the nested family and associate its parameters to the appropriate parameters in the parent family. So once they're associated, you change the parameters in the parent family and it pushes that info to the next family.
