Generic Family Reference Plane Visibility

Just made a generic family. While I was creating an extrusion, I also created some reference planes.  After I finished editing the extrusion, those reference planes became invisible.  This is the first time I noticed such behavior (Revit 2017).  Is this change of visibility as intended?  Is there a way to change the visibility of one or more of the reference planes to allow them to be visible while not editing the extrusion?

(Normally, I would create the reference planes first but hadn't considered that reference planes could be nested into parts of the generic model). Thanks.

It has been always like that.  Reference planes created while in editing mode only pertain to the edited element.  If you want them to always visible, create them outside of the editing mode.

Thanks for the reply.  Was hoping for a way to change their visibility after the fact but see that that is not possible.

... you can draw those reference planes before drawing the extrusion, that way you can see those after family is done

Yes, I already understood that. The question was whether a reference plane visibility could be changed and that question was already answered. It didn’t seem appropriate to mark that as a solution though. Resolved but not solved.

@dbroad

But what is the reason or advantage of creating reference planes during the sketch mode of an extrusion instead of making them before creating the solids?

None that I can think of except the need to pre-plan all the reference planes and required dimensions before doing the sketch. Forgetting a single reference plane means the need to exit sketch mode, create the plane, and then start the sketch mode again. Don’t get me wrong. I can see the advantages of having reference planes only display during a sketch. But sometimes, you may realize that the sketch ones need to be global to the family. As far as I can see, if the need arises, the local reference needs to be deleted along with all the constraints related to it and then redrawn globally and the reconstrained.
I was just hoping for a local/global switch to simplify the sketch/refine cycle.

@dbroad No, you don´t have to discard the sketch to draw a reference plane outside the sketch and then start the sketch again from zero. You can finish the extrusion that you are doing, create the additional reference plane, then edit the extrusion, use the new reference plane in the sketch, then finish the extrusion again.

@dbroad - you can see them if you hit the Reveal Constraints button while you are in Sketch mode as well as the Family view. Not that it does you ANY good at all after the fact....

Thanks. That might help when investigating problems later.  It is odd though that selecting a reference plane during the reveal constraints mode displays reference planes as dimension styles rather than reference planes.  It also doesn't highlight the extrusion related to the nested reference plane, which would make it more helpful in understanding the constraints hierarchy within the family.
