General quiery "how detailed can revit produce building control drawing.

I have been using AutoCAD for approx 20-25 years and I have recently purchased "infrastructure design Suite 2017" thi includes REVIT. my question is worth the effort learning it. I use autocad for building control drawings "I have all my notes and general details linked via fields and all my block are either dynamic and Parametric. Can revit prodice the same sort of thing IE when i put a window in will it include heads, stepped dpc, cills and all general arrangements around the window,

I suppose my question is, if I go to the hassle of drawing a house in 3d will it generate a section fully detailed?

The image attached show the drawing defaults as custom fields "insulations, wall details etc" The section in completed dynamic blocks the only line i add are the magenta of the stairs. the table to the right is a stair checker to make sure it conforms Building regulations.

all comments and discussions would be great.

I have a Bit of OCD where CAD is concerned

The answer to "Can Revit do this?" Yes it can, but not without effort to develop all of the content in order to make it possible.

You can build all of these parametric part in Revit just as you have built them in AutoCAD with Dynamic blocks.

I am going to say you will no doubt be frustrated with the differences between Revit and AutoCAD. And you will lose productivity while you recreate all of this customized content, but to be fair, I suspect you developed this content in AutoCAD over a number of years so you would need to assume developing similar content in Revit is going to take some time as well.

So is it "worth the effort learning" that might depend on the clients you are working with and the kinds of projects you are looking to work on. In some cases it might be better to stick with something you have been doing for 20-25 years, but then again working on "new" challenges may be something you are looking for.

If you are expecting Revit to do what you show and describe in the one small image straight away out of the box, you may need to adjust your expectations.

thanks for the responce, and your comments are much appreciated. I was hoping someone would say what you have said because as i said on my post OCD, when it comes to CAD, I take it IE a window in a wall will be assemblies and sub assemblies. where depending upon my OCD will depend on the detail.

I mean no disrespect to anyone about the  "OCD" but its the simplist way to explain.

Its just over the years I have messed about with AutoCAD "architectural desktop, AEC etc etc etc" and they are more of a hinderence than a help.

Its better to get comments from users that sales people.

again I say thanks, I'll keep the item open for a while to see if anu one else comments.

Sorry no disrespect intended, as u know people say software will do X when they really have never used in a day to day basis. Do you have any good videos, links etc with regards to say creating a windows with all the details, or possibly a dormer window?

Civil 3d has a program "sub assembly generator" dose revit have similar. I have used assemblies and subassemblies in Solidworks so I am familure with these process.

If you have any good links tutorials etc all help would be greatly appreciated.

I am always look forward learning new things.

Hi Further update

I am currently going through Lynda.com course and will over the months and on my Holiday's create the content required to produce Building Control Drawings. Hopefully be able to answer my on question.

From the training I have completed so far everything looks good, as u r in the development team "sorry about the sale comments" could you add an option to add the repeat annotation in the structures dialog?

!Revit look good at present! "will there B a REVIT CIVIL in the future" ?

Yes- Revit can do everything you describe, but (as you'll expect) it will require you learning how to do so- and that is different from how you do it in ACAD.

A client of mine has just learnt how to model all their own door and window families- and these are quite complex- ie include nested parametric lintels, fire dampers, etc.

Kind regards,
Ian
