Furniture imports from other programs

I have heaps of furniture to convert from Vectorworks to Revit.

Remodeling is not an option since it's just too much work and a lot of nurbs modeling is involved.

The only thing that is really important to me is to be able to assign materials to the different parts as a parameter.

What would be the best workflow? Importing SAT of DWG, I have found no possibility so far to assign a material to a parameter. Any good suggestion would be of great help.

I've done this with other file types not Vectororks files

One workaround that I've used is to create a new Revit furniture family and import the other model into that family.

To assign materials I've actually broken the original model into separate parts and inserted each of those parts into my furniture family. You can then assign materials to each part. I'm not sure if that is possible with the Vectorworks files.

Probably are better solutions but that one has work well.

Yes, I could split them into parts externally and than import the parts one by one. Materials can only be changed in the Object Styles. There is no way to associate a parameter with a material.

That's true. It would be nice if they would add that functionality.

You could set up materials specifically for the part of the furniture and adjust the material in the project.

Been there done that. Some things to remember -

1) Geometry imported into Revit does not have the intelligence that native Revit geometry can have that would allow you the  flexibility to customize families

2) Controlling materials and visibility would be a pain

3) A lot of times the export process would give unexpected results - additional lines that you don't want to see, etc.

Bringing in furniture families that you know and love from other programs would be effort and time efficient if you only had to deal with a few.  Where you have to deal with a large number of repeatable components, the issues you may face in the conversion process may outweigh the advantages.

The best strategy - use the basic libraries (Imperial or Metric) that come with Revit. Tweak them to make them serve your purpose. You can generate a high quality and effective library without too much effort. And there is more than enough experience on this Forum to help you out with issues.

Example:  you have a chair backrest that need 3 material options: leather, vinyl, fabric.

- make 3 copies of the backrest

- open each one and change the layer of geometry to one of the above material

- import all 3 backrests in your chair family

- add a Yes/No parameter to control visibility of each backrest option

Now you can change the material of the backrest by check/uncheck boxes.

p/s:  I would probably kill myself after two chairs and remodel them in Revit when I resurrect.

Hi,

Thanks. Yes, I am aware of all these solutions. Just thought I overlooked something, but it seems there is no neat solution where parameters can be associated to materials.
I will probably remodel parts of the furniture, but we are talking about serious numbers. The manufacturer has it all as Vectorworks models. It would be really time consuming to remodel the nurbs models as Revit models. Then again Revit has not a user friendly interface to do nurbs modeling.

Thank you all.
