Hi all,
I need to create a set of chair which back rest are different but they are all trims of one base shape. I already create the chair base but i need to trim the shape in the following variants:
chair 1: circular hole in the back
chair 2: square hole in the back
chair 3: triangular hole in the back
im new to revit and as far as i know i can create a visibility parameter for the different chairs but my idea is to use a void shape to cut the Base Chair into those 3 different types. Ive seen from Revit families that you can create types within family that are different between them not just by using the size parameters so. can anyone help me on how to link a void shape to a type so when i select chair 3 the triangular hole is shown?
thanks in advance for the help.

Here's the strategy that I would follow -
1) Create the chair back (void and all) in a different family. So this would mean that I would have three chair back families.
2) Insert all three chair back families into the chair family. Create a visibility parameter and associate the visibility of the chair back family to it
3) In the chair family - create three different types. Check the visibility of the required chair back in each type
Another approach would be to insert the chair back families to the chair families using Family Type parameters. In that, you will be presented with a drop down that would allow you to pick the required chair back family.
... you can take a look at this chair from Herman Miller
... it has 3 types of legs / support (you can see those in the family)
... but when uploaded you can choose only one..
... that can help you to reverse engineer how was it made...

Hi Sahay,
your approach is great however i was trying to achieve the same with only adding the void shape to the visibility states. That way I was only modeling the void element while the base chair remaining always be the same. do you think this is doable?
thanks in advance for your help.
Thanks for this!! I started with this same example to do the reverse engineering but i got stuck trying to avoid modeling the same shape all the time to later add the void removing it from the back of the chair. This example follows Sahay Idea for modeling the different variant an then add the visibility state to them.
i would like to be able to choose from the drop down menu in the properties tab by creating the different types with the different voids...again i think this is more around Sahay´s explanation... excuse my lack of knowledge. and thanks to you also for your contribution.
best,
J.
... don't worry... totally got you
... I also like the @Sahay_R approach
....try to do as you were saying something with a drop down list like this.... maybe...
.... good luck

hi again,
im attaching the example as far i can take it. I create as Sahay suggest, and create 3 different families for the back, then load them into the legs frame(full chair). The i create a visibility parameter and 3 different family types
CISNE
DENTADA
HUECO CENTRO
When i load them to a new project i can select the different types but they do not change. I must be doing something wrong with the visibility parameter but i cannot find the reason why. any help??
i GOT IT!!!
i was linking wrongly the parameters... thanks to you both for the help!!! im giving Sahay the credit since her aproach was the one i finally use. but thanks you both!!!
best,
J.
