From family hosted to non-hosted

I have downloaded a family and it is floor based.

Can I change it to a non-hosted one? Is it possible or do I have to create a new one?

Thank you very much

… hi @Anonymous

… of course you can

… open a new generic non-hosted one

…open the hosted one and

… you can copy CRTL + C all the elements from the face based families (geometry, reference planes, parametric dimensions) , check everything

… and paste CTRL+V on the new non-hosted family.

… you can re-constrain it

… need to create / apply some new parameters

… or change / adapt it to the new configuration

… re-name it

.. done

If the family is simple you can copy paste to a non host family.

If the family is complex with lots of parameters and constraints, you can do:

- place the family F1 on a floor in file A

- link file A to file B

- copy monitor the family F1 from the link and it will be come a face based family F2

- edit F2, select the solid host and change the thickness to 0 and let it gets deleted

- now F2 is non hosted

Sounds like similar answers but it is ok

Now I know that it's possible

Thank you

Hi, @dansk.irak @aRcHiTeCt.JM

1. If it's hosted on Wall/Ceiling/Floor/Roof etc

  • Change the category of the element to something that can be copy monitored after linking
  • Link the file with the hosted family to another project then copy monitor the element
  • This will convert the family into Face based element

Here is a Screencast of technique I'm using to convert face hosted family to unhosted-
