Has anyone had there Revit program revert to the old version so that when a file is being opened you receive a notice that the file was saved in the newer version and it needs to be closed, prompting you to close the file, open the newer version by itself, and then open the file?

Ideally you should not open files from windows explorer (DC or RCO)...you should open the relevant Revit version and go through the File Menu/Tab>> Open
Would be useful as well if you add a suffix or prefix to file names indicating version

Easiest way to make the file open in newer version is the right click and select Open with
Then you go in there to select the EXE path of the software version you want to open with.

It is what Autodesk recommends and safest when working with multiple versions

I'm surprised this has never happened to you before. This happens to me all the time. It's actually a good thing if you need to edit and return the file. Revit is not backward compatible. You don't want to upgrade it to the "wrong" version, work on it and return the file.
The message is being thrown because you are trying to open a version of Revit that was created in a later version than the currently opened session version. It's not a show-stopper though. Just launch a session that is compatible and open the file in that one.
If you don't know what the version is, another way to find out what it is, is to temporarily change the file extension from "rvt" to "txt", open it in Notepad and Find "B U I L D".
If you insist on double clicking...Do the following and it should reset the default to Revit"s latest version
Path should look like the following unless you installed Revit to a different location or you named your drives differently

Both the quotes and the command switch...
If you want to open several files in multiple sessions of revit you would set the switch to /e %1

We use 3-4 Revit versions so anyone opening a file via double clicking the file in File Browser will promptly receive proper spanking.
I believe my issue is deeper than my limited ability to remedy the issues at hand. I thinking My best approach would be to uninstall the program and reinstall it. If I minimize the open windows and the computed goes into sleep mode due to inactivity, when I open everything up again the Revit program informs me that there is a registration issue and the program will shut down. It then shuts down and then I have to reopen the 2022 issue and then the project I am working on.
I'm thinking these issues started after the last Windows update but I can't be sure.
I believe I have an issue with Windows or an update that isn't working correctly. My program will shut down after I have left it open and I have stepped away. When I return and bring it back up it informs me that I have a subscription issue And the program will shut down, which it does. I have to re-open the program and file and then it works fine.
I'm thinking I need to un-install the program and re-install it.
