Filtering objects within a family

Hi,

Is it possible to filter particular objects within a family, from my main project file? For instance, I have window families which include a GRC window surround, cut into the brickwork. I would like to highlight these objects for a certain drawing but it does not appear to be possible to filter particular objects (maybe by subcategory, material etc) by using filters.

I considered changing the appearance of the material applied to the various subcategories, but that would affect all of my views / sheets, which is not ideal.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

You have to set the nested family as shared. Then you are able to filter it.

Thanks, but unfortunately the GRC frame is not nested into the window, it is modelled directly into the window family as a sweep, which can flex with the window etc. This seemed more intuitive at the time - creating a linked model that would need to flex with the window and also cut away part of the wall seemed fairly complex

Is there another way to colour these objects? perhaps by subcategory?

Thanks

Subcategory allows you to change line color but not surface color. So You are limited with subcategory.

Yes.  You can assign an instance material parameter to the frame in the family, then you can simply select a window in the project and change the frame material via that instance parameter.

If you want more control of the frame such as filtering, tagging, overriding graphics... then you do need to nest in a shared family in the window family as @syman2000 suggested.  And yes, it can flex with the window size and cut the wall, among other things.

Do you mean that you want the GRC Frame to be in color in a Hidden View?

If so, Nest a Color-Filled Region Detail Family  into the Window Family.

@barthbradley last reply could get you there with some tweaks...ie use shared nested items + subcategories:

  1. Make the geomety of the GRC not visible in front/back views (via visibility settings)
  2. Nest 2 detail items (shared and each of a different subcategory) to show in elevations instead of the grc geometry
    • First detail item would be the default/not highlighted
    • Second would be the highlighted
  3. In the view where you need them highlighted, u switch off subcategory of detail item 1 and on that of 2

Ideally you should have used a shared child for the grc frame...but the above does the trick too
