Family material parameters

Hello,

I downloaded a gate family and changed the material of all nested families to grey/iron from the current brown finish. When I loaded this into the project, i expected that all instances would reflect the change. however, it seems i have to change the material parameter for each instance. 

Is there a different way to change the default family material?

Use a type instead of instance material parameter then you only need to change one per type.  Or assign the material directly to the geometry in the family instead of via a parameter then you control the materials entirely within the family.
