Family hosted in floor above

Hi Guys, I want to make a family that is placed in a floorplan but hosted in the floor above this floorplan. Like a lighting fixture, is it possible?

Of course. Do you want to show it in Floor Plan or Reflected Ceiling Plan, or both?

I need a symbol to show in the floorplan. While the object itself is hosted in the floor above. Please notice that I want to place the element in the floor plan where I want to see the symbol.

Hi @jelmer.eekman,

Just create your family, but make it floor based, it will allow you to place it at the upper level of the floor but the object itself can be under it.

Your problem will be making the symbol visible from the below floor plan.

Basically, for your embed symbol to be visible in the below floor plan, the view range needs to cut through your object. In other terms you might experience issue because your view might not cut the 3D object itself.

Here is the solution though:

Build a reference line that extends below the 3D object, that is long enough to intersect with your main view range. The line will be invisible in the main model but Revit will still consider that it cuts through your family, and will display the Symbol.

Hope that was clear enough,

Do not hesitate asking for more details,

Happy new year 2017!

Hi François,

Happy new year to you too.

Thanks for your reply but I think you are missing out on something.

I want to place the object in the floor plan where the symbol is visible. I don't want to first go to the floorplan above to place the component and next switch to the floorplan where the symbol is visible.

Re-Hi @jelmer.eekman,

I know, thought of it afterwards..

Here is the thing:

If you want your family to adapt to the floor (for example for it to adapt to the floor thickness), it has to be floor based.

And in order to place a floor based family, you need to see the floor.

So here are two solutions:

Either you place the component  in the floor above view

Or you place it in a ceiling view (so that you see the floor above).

If you really want to place your component in a classic view of your floor below,

you can still use a two level based component with a parameter for the floor thickness! this one you will be able to place from the level below.

Keep in mind that you need the view to intersect the 3D model though, so use a reference line as described above!

Hi François,

Thanks for your reply, so the answer is no, it is not possible. I will use the two level based family, started allready with that a while ago.

Thanks,

And the reason you must be in the floor plan below while placing tha family
is?

Has to do with workflow, we are adding lighting fixtures while customer is watching with us.

You can create a Plan Region and change the View range to cut above the level above.  Make the floor category semi transparent so that you can still see through the floor to the working level.  Place the floor based objects and they should be hosted by the floor above.  When done, just resize or move the Plan region away from the plan view.

Nice workaround but not what we are looking for. Too bad there is no other way. We'll go with the two level based families.

Hi @ToanDN,

Actually the object wouldn't place on the right floor if it is transparent, would it?

In a normal view it wouldn't, so if the plan region has that ability it would be a good thing to know!

Cheers,

François

I was aware of that so I did say semi transparent.
