Hi all
I have been working on Revit for some time but very rarely needed to create a parametric family, and since course I can only vaguely remember. The current work I have relies very heavily on it though. I have been reasonably successful but still not overly confident in doing so, current family I am working on being the perfect example.
I would like to know, is there something I can look at that is slightly more involved than a chair or a table to see the process from start to finish?
Also, this particular family was originally an AutoCAD dwg file that really ended up being "traced", for lack of a better term. Is there a better way to do this?
Thanks in advance
Importing CAD into Revit to "Trace" over is a very common. As for your other question, I'm not following what you want, but if you want to learn how to build families, I've always found that "reverse-engineering" manufacturers' BIM Content a great help.
I have always approached creating families this way.
sketch out on paper what you want
does it consist of a kit of parts? different views massing etc.
will you be using Generic Annotative , or Detail Items nested in your family?
start with the skeleton (reference planes) these will control how it flexes when you assign parameters to the values
create the muscle (solid masses , voids etc)
Add Skin (materials Finishes) if needed.
Add the Brains (Parameters, shared or Family type or instance)
plan ahead to figure how you want this family to function for you and your users.
attached is a basic desk with return family to get you started the dimensions are based on type parameters select which type you want and see how the dimensions are assigned.
this is in Revit 2014 so save it locally then upgrade it as you want
