I am wondering why some families are selectable outside of their extents, sometimes way outside.
As an example, I've edited this sink family so that the reference planes are set to 'not a reference' but when I load it back into the project, the sink is selectable as if I am crossing the reference planes, far away from the sink; see screenshot where mouse is hovering over sink to be selected. This seems to be fairly common and cumbersome, Thanks for any help!

I think it could be selecting the "30" x 48" ADA clearance lines" in front of the sink, which are probably hidden with Visibility Parameters in the family? Unless you absolutely need them, I would delete the clearance lines.
Thank you for looking into this. I set those lines to 'not a reference' as well and they are controlled by a visibility parameter. When I hover over the area in front of the sink (when loaded into a project) and move slowly from left to right, there are at least 8 times where the family can be selected. Any additional thoughts are appreciated.
Ok, if I understand correctly---
If the clearance lines must stay--don't use reference planes or reference lines--use symbolic lines.
...FWIW, there are also selection enhancements that you can utilize, such as pinning elements and deselecting "select pinned elements" via "Modify" drop-down box.
This family appears to work correctly. Can you explain the difference? The clearance lines were symbolic lines and it appears that in your nested family for the clearance box they are also symbolic lines. Is it because the clearance box is nested? Thank you for the help.

You got it.
