Exporting REVIT to CAD - following a prevailing CAD template

Hello All,

My Revit project has a submission requirement in which Revit sheets must be exported to AutoCAD format. The exported AutoCAD file has to match the prevailing template and submission standards. Please suggest a method to develop an export setup in Revit which can generate an accurate AutoCAD file similar to native CAD file.

I have tried a few export setups, but the CAD file still needs a generous amount of rework to be submission ready.

It is important that the CAD file follows the prevailing template because an automated PDF conversion of the CAD file happens within client's CDE with the standard ctb setting.

Open to explore other solutions and workarounds which can give me a precise CAD file.

Thanks,

Soumya

You mention that you have problems with the export. But you do not mention what type of issues you are having. What kind of rework you hgave to do in Autocad?

Without that it is impossible to think about possible solutions/workarounds.

But that said I can imagine if you have a strict template to follow that Revit can not match that and that rework will be needed in Autocad.

Maybe Autocad macros can help to speed up the rework process?

Go to Export=>Options=>Export Setups DWG/DXF and then modify the DWG/DXF Export Setup.

There are two ways:

- Custom the DWG export in Revit to write to a custom Layer/Color standard.

- Create a Drawing Standard in AutoCAD with a custom Layer/Color standard to match the required template, then run Drawing Standard Checker in AutoCAD on the exported Drawings.

Thank you so much for the reply. Let me give a brief:

In the Revit Export Setup, I have mapped the layers and line types based on my CAD template. When I export the Revit Sheet to CAD, the layers and colours come properly. Following are a few issues:

  • Line type scale and Hatch scale – Comes out very differently in AutoCAD
  • Leaders, cut marks etc. – Becomes exploded. Is there a setting which can give these kind of elements as polylines? If yes, can Global width for polylines be attributed within any export setting?
  • Tags, Door swings etc. – Becomes Blocks
  • Multiline Text – Gets split per line

So, these are some issues that had been identified at the moment. Since, I am giving the CAD drawing for a formal submission, lot of the presentation and standards needs to be addressed. Is there a way where things can be sorted within Revit export setup and other Revit settings? So that the CAD file can be submitted without any rework?

I think exporting without reworking when needing to follow a strict standard is not possible. There are too many differences between the two different pieces of software to get everything converted as needed.

Have you experimented with the DWG export settings?

To automate this you might need a combination of add-ons inside Revit and/or Autocad.

Here some tips that might help improving the conversion.

-Look at the free Enhanced DWG exporter for Revit 2018.

-Multiline text might be solved with settings in the export options HERE some information about this.

A Revit project with a strict .dwg deliverable seems contradictory to me. Two things come to mind. Have the client make their own .dwgs or do the project in AutoCAD. If neither of those are possible, you will have to bite the bullet and clean up the exports as most of the items you mention are not fixable from the Revit side.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.
